When i was at school, I often used to wonder what on earth i would do with all the theories, formulae, facts, and figures we learnt for 7 straight hours every day. After a grueling day at school, even my head was still swimming with visions of the Pythagorean Theorem and the Versailles Treaty og1919, all i could think of was passing the final exams that loomed ahead like the proverbial sword over my head.
Many years and countless exams later, i still wonder what the purpose of learning everything was..beacause (and i am not afraid to admit this) i have forgotten most of it. Indeed, can most of us still rattle off the chemistry formuale, geomatry thorems, amd historical treaties we memorized from classes 1 to 12? (i think not.) As the Discovery Centre's close friend and advisor Oscar Becerra questions in his article, if most of us are destined to forget most of what we learn at school, then what is the meaning of education?
Do we just go to school to pass exams? (If so, isn't that rather foolish?) Or can school actullay equip us with the skills we need to deal with situations we encounter in everyday life ? If the later is to be ther case, then the "theories and formuale" we learn at school must be made more Meaningful.
At The Discovery Centre SmartSchool, our mission (and is use this word on purpose, beacause it is something we continuously strive towards) is to do precisely that. We try to achieve this 'meaning' through engaging students in activities and projects in which they must apply, test, and manipulate the knowledge taht they have learnt. These activites and projects, in turn, use different technologies, particularly computers, robotics, and digital filmmaking.
In conclusion, I would like to have to take this opportunity to welcome you to The Discovery Centre SmartSchool and thank you for considering us a satkeholder in your child's future.
