It Could be argued that the single most important feature that distinguishes the Discovery Center SmartSchool from other schools is the waty in which technology is used as a tool in the learning process. Some of the tools being used at the Discovery Centre are as follows :
The Robotics Invention System
Lego Mindstorms® Robotics Invention System (RIS) was created by Lego in collaboration with the centre of Leading & epistemology of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is a revolutionary new system that empowers Primary School (and olders) students to build robots and then program them to behave as they please.
To the casual observer, the Robotics Invention System comes across as a fancy, hi-tech toy (albeit one that fascinates children and adults alike). What makes teh system revolutionary, however, is its phenomenal application in education. Because while students construct robots, they intuitively apply many of the abstract concepts they learn in science and mathematics.
At the Discovery Centre SmartSchool, our teachers have been trained by leading international experts on the use of robotics in enchancing the learning of Science and Mathematics.
Digital Filmmaking
The Media has long been used at different levels in schools around the world. At the Discovery Centre SmartSchool, media plays a central vital role in our curriculm. Each Discovery Centre features a fully equippes Media Lab, with facilities for digital filmmaking, including audio & video equipment sound & video editing software, Apple Macintosh computers, digital viseo cameras, 'talk show' studio and more. Whether students are producing fictional short films or historical documentaries, digital filmmaking is a collaborative process involving visualization, storyboarding, script writing, filming, and editing that engages students in even the most 'boring' of subjects.
Cross-curricular software & Internet
Cross-curicular educational software and the internet are used routinely in the classrooms at the Discovery Centre SmartSchool.
Software is carefully chosen so that it adds value to the teaching process. The Discovery Centre SmartSchool favors software that is collaborative, cross-curricular, and teacher-facilitated. A favorite with our students us 'Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?' a popualr educational software package that mimics an action packed game.
